HAZMAT team expands detection capabilities

Region H HSRRS/HAZMAT recently expanded its capabilities to detect and identify sources of radiation.  The group was the recipient of a Homeland Security Regionalization grant to purchase RIIDEYE-G Portable Spectroscopic Radioisotope Identification Equipment (2"x2" NaI(TI)) from Thermo Eberline LLC.

The specialized equipment will enhance the team's ability to respond to radiological incidents. “We’ve always had the ability to detect radiation,” said Buchanan County Emergency Manager Bill Brinton. “What’s new is that we can identify the types of radiation.”

The project was allocated $11,945.00 from FY2010 Regionalization grant funding.  The unit ultimately cost $9,237.39.

Region H volunteers have already conducted training on how to use the new equipment.  More information can be found here.
